The team focuses on the new process, new technology and new materials in the field of water pollution control and water supply purification. The main research areas include: new biological treatment technology of sewage (waste) water; mechanisms and technologies of redox removal of toxic organic compounds; Development of new functional agents for water treatment, such as microbial flocculant, nano zero-valent iron and adsorbent; Bioelectrochemical technology based on microbial fuel cell; Safe water supply technologies for biological aerated filter and advanced ozonation treatment.
The team have presided over the National Science and Technology Major Project for Water Pollution Control and Treatment, 863 projects, national natural science foundation of China, provincial research projects and international cooperation projects and so on. The team focuses on the major national and local strategic needs. Facing with the regional and industrial air pollution problems, the team insists on focusing on the forefront of science in view of the current situation and development trend of the atmospheric environment quality in China's key urban agglomerations. The team has carried out systematic research and development work in the field of atmospheric environment and pollution control, such as pollutant discharge, pollution formation mechanism, health effects, reduction technology and control strategy, atmospheric environment management and decision-making assistance. Nowadays, the team has formed four academic directions, including identification of air pollutant sources and formation mechanism of complex pollution, environmental catalytic technology and new air pollutant control, theory and technology of industrial waste gas purification, and research on air pollution and health effects.
In the past five years, the team has presided over 15 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 projects of National 863 Program and 3 sub-projects, 23 science and technology projects of Ministry of Education, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Guangdong Province, 6 international cooperation projects, and 73 other projects, with a total research funds of over 36 million yuan.
The team has published 60 SCI papers (32 papers in the first and second regions), and 96 papers in Chinese core journals or above and has authorized 26 patents.

Industrial Water Pollution Control Team
The research areas of the team are industrial water consumption saving, industrial wastewater recycling, industrial wastewater pollution process, and principles and technologies of pollution control. The team established a new model of water consumption, put forwarded new methods and technologies of water saving; studied new technique of resource recycling for some industrial wastewater with high concentration, high energy and high value; evaluated the process of industrial water pollution and its environmental hazards; put forwarded new theory of pollution control technology, realized the industrialization of industrial technology.
In the past five years, the team has undertaken more than 20 national projects such as key projects of National Nature Science Foundation, National Science and Technology Support Program, 863 national plans and national water project. The team also published more than 600 papers, among which more than 160 papers are included in SCI. The team has also applied for and obtained more than 50 authorized patents. The team has won one Second Prize of the National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, as well as five other provincial and ministerial awards.

Solid Waste Treatment and Resource Recovery Team
The team mainly focuses on the solid treatment and resource recycling technology and environmental biotechnology. In 1995, it started to conduct new technology for landfill leachate, especially the principle and technology of biological denitrification of landfill leachate SND and Anammox, molecular biology detection technology, and advanced treatment technology. In the past 10 years, a lot of research work has been carried out on the theory and new technology of municipal sludge and organic waste composting, biological hydrogen production and energy utilization, building materials and material utilization, application of desulfurized ash and other bulk industrial solid wastes as soil amendments, e-waste and precious metal recycling and nitrogen and phosphorus removal from urban sewage and industrial wastewater.

Given the current urgent need for clean and sustainable energy, the team focuses on China’s sustainable energy development strategy, bases on our school’s advantageous disciplines of energy, and integrates relevant resources inside and outside the school, carrying out forward-looking theoretical and technical research on new energy materials and technologies and new energy storage and conversion. The main research areas include the theoretical design of the components and nanostructures of new materials; the preparation of nanomaterials; the light-electric absorption and conversion, transmission, and coupling of nanomaterials and its regulation and design; and the charge and mass transport in ion and electronic conductors and its modeling, simulation and in-situ characterization; electrophysical and electrochemical behaviors of thin films and interfaces; solid-state electrochemical devices for energy storage and conversion, etc.
