Three research centres of SCUT were to be set up after being approved by Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Department, according to Notification of Building New Provincial Engineering Technology Research Centres in 2014 issued by the agency. Guangdong Technology Research Centre of Aerospace Advanced Materials and Structural Engineering, which was led by SCET, was also on the list, thus SCET boasting six provincial research bases.

To take the lead in Southern China, Guangdong Technology Research Centre of Aerospace Advanced Materials and Structural Engineering carries out research and development in many aspects, such as low-cost composite materials and structures for planes made in China, dynamics technology of aerospace advanced materials and structure, stability of the complex structures of aircraft, and coupled multiphysics analysis, so as to enhance the innovation capability of technology and engineering in aerospace industry, and to provide technical support for the development, transformation and upgrading of the aerospace industry in Guangdong Province.
