Zhu Jingxu was giving a lecture
“Start from me, start from now” --- a simple but powerful slogan, was put forward bythe 1977 cohort from the Class 72 of Chemical Engineering in Tsinghua University 40 years ago. In the lecture, Prof. Zhu explained the new meanings of the slogan for the new era. He recalled that when our country was in poverty and poor living conditions, the “new generation” growing up in the 1980s have overcome great hardship and strived for revitalizing the Chinese nation, and have left us a series of legends that fought together with our motherland. He said that the slogan has spread throughout the whole nation, representing the most powerful voice in the early years of reform and opening-up, in accordance with the developmental direction of the nation, and inspired Chinese people from generation to generation to devote themselves to our country, which demonstrated the genuine miniature of struggling.
On-site interaction
When talking about the memories, Prof. Zhu Jingxu was deeplyfilled with emotion. He said during the past 40 years, he has witnessed the great development and prosperity of the nation, and has realized the importance of integrating the development of individuals into the development of the whole nation. He said that he has always come back to the motherland for at least 100 days each year to help the domestic scholars to expand international exchanges and to cultivate postgraduates though his major works are in abroad. Combining what he had seen and felt, Prof. Zhu Shared with the students his profound understanding that scientific development is inseparable from human progress, social development and national spirit, and put forward the proposition that individual development needs to advance with the times.
Talents are of vital importance for the development of a country. “Though the slogan ‘Start from me, start from now’ was put forward 40 years ago, it was never outdated.” Prof. Zhu Jingxu stressed that after 40 years of rapid development, the motherland has achieved a great leap from being rich to being strong, but there are still many technical problems that need the young generation to break through and lead the way.
“In the course of research, especially applied research, it is not enough to have a bright mind. It is also necessary to have other non-intellectual factors such as perseverance, positive attitude towards life and broad mind”. By sharing his growing thoughts and insights, he also encouraged the young students to bravely shoulder the responsibilities of the times, gather the light of youth, bright way to pursue their dreams.
