On April 1, South China University of Technology (SCUT) partnered with the Outstanding Young Scholars Society UK to host the “Outstanding Young Scholars Society UK Guangzhou Tour and the inauguration of the International Outstanding Young Scholars Innovation Center at Guangzhou International Campus (GZIC). The event was attended by SCUT Vice President Li Weiqing, Royal Academy of Engineering Fellow and the Society founder Professor Sai Gu, as well as representatives from Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, and representatives of relevant industries, enterprises and investment companies in Guangzhou.  

Event Highlights  

In her speech, Vice President Li Weiqing emphasized SCUT's commitment to attracting and cultivating global top-tier innovative talents. She stated that collaborating with Outstanding Young Scholars Society UK for this event represents a significant initiative to advance the integrated reform of education, technology and talent development, while supporting Guangdong Modern Industrial System Development and the Guangdong Talent Magnet Initiative. She expressed confidence that the Innovation Center would become a new hub for gathering global wisdom, stimulating innovation vitality, and injecting strong momentum into institutional, regional and national development.  

Professor Sai Gu expressed his honor and pleasure in co-hosting this event with SCUT, hoping it would enhance overseas young scholars' understanding of both the university and Guangzhou. By facilitating talent and research project commercialization, the event aims to better harness young scholars' expertise to support technological innovation in Guangzhou and the Greater Bay Area.  

Center Unveiling  

Attendees jointly unveiled SCUT's International Outstanding Young Scholars Innovation Center, which serves as a crucial bridge connecting overseas young scholars with domestic development needs. The Center will provide comprehensive support and services for Chinese youth studying/working abroad, creating platforms for academic exchange, achievement transformation, and career development upon their return, while attracting international scholars to innovate and start businesses in Guangzhou and share the benefits of Greater Bay Area's sci-tech advancements.  

Project Roadshow

Following the ceremony, nearly 30 young scholars from 15 prestigious global universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL, King's College London, Universit?t Hamburg and University College Dublin presented cutting-edge research projects covering intelligent diagnostic chips, mussel adhesive protein applications, and building-integrated photovoltaic energy storage systems. Multiple investment firms conducted on-site negotiations with the talents.  

Pre-event Activities  

Prior to the unveiling, scholars visited GZIC laboratories and local enterprises like GAC Aion for in-depth exchanges. They were deeply impressed by GZIC's advanced research facilities and international talent cultivation approach.  

Professor Yu Guan from University of Warwick noted: This platform allows us to attract investment through presentations while providing channels for introducing overseas talents to China. The Innovation Center marks an excellent starting point.  

Dr. Junxin Wang, researcher at Cambridge University's Materials Department, gained firsthand understanding of Future Technology Institute's research environment and university policies during campus tours and leadership meetings. He praised faculty members' enthusiasm in facilitating resource connections.

This academic+industrial dual-capacity faculty bridges theoretical innovation and industrial application, providing students with unparalleled interdisciplinary training opportunities.
