How is South China University of Technology (SCUT) contributing to building China into an education powerhouse? In recent years, SCUT has advanced the mutually reinforcing strategies of internationalization at home and two-way internationalization, accelerating the development of a world-class university through high-level educational opening-up and supporting the national goal of strengthening China through education. 

On August 27, the Ministry of Education's new media platforms, including Weiyan Education, China Education News, and China Education Television, featured SCUT's innovative reforms and practices in promoting high-standard educational opening-up.

Building China into an education powerhouse by 2035 is a major strategic decision made by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, reflecting the deep commitment and earnest expectations of the national leadership. The education system has embraced this mission with determination, striving to write a new chapter in which educational advancement underpins and leads Chinese modernization. Recently, the Ministry of Education's new media launched a special column, Forging Ahead on the Path to an Education Powerhouse: Progress Along the Course Charted by the General Secretary, showcasing dynamic initiatives across the education sector.

Today, as part of the series Growing Together with an Education Powerhouse under this column, we present SCUT's story of exploring high-level educational opening-up.

This summer vacation, the Guangzhou International Campus of South China University of Technology (SCUT) welcomed over 70 international students from 15 prestigious universities worldwide, including Imperial College London, the University of Edinburgh, Rutgers University, and Barcelona Tech. Over the course of two weeks, these students joined their Chinese peers in the International Summer School on Emerging Engineering, learning from renowned faculty members of top institutions such as Harvard, MIT, Oxford, and SCUT, while also participating in academic visits.   

The summer school courses gave me a futuristic feeling beyond reality. China's leadership in technological innovation has completely amazed me, said Mora Gallegos Pedro Jose, an undergraduate from Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences in Germany, whose experience at the program altered his future academic plans. Before the summer school even concluded, he visited the campus office to inquire: After completing my bachelor's degree, I hope to return here for a master's program.

The successful hosting of the 2024 International Summer School for Emerging Engineering Education serves as a microcosm of South China University of Technology's proactive response to the national strategy of opening up education. By synergizing local internationalization with two-way internationalization to achieve mutual reinforcement, the university is accelerating the construction of a world-class institution through high-level educational openness, thereby contributing to the building of a strong educational nation.
