Mark Maynard has been on the staff of The Independent since 1975, first as a sports clerk, then sports writer, sports editor, managing editor and now editor of the daily newspaper in northeastern Kentucky.
He has covered many significant sporting events, including the University of Kentucky’s Final Four appearances from 1996-1998, the Cincinnati Reds World Series championship in 1990 and countless Kentucky high school championships over the past 37 years. Mark has won more than 50 writing awards from the Kentucky Press Association. He is a member of the College Football Writers Association and the College Basketball Writers Association. He is also the editor of Prokickernew.com, a website dedicated to punting, kicking and long-snapping through nationally recognized camp Prokicker.com.
He has published three books: “Mark My Words,” (2010) “Teamwork,” (2011) and “Tragedy and Triumph.” (2012).
He graduated from Paul G. Blazer High School in 1975 and Morehead State University in 1980.
Mark and his wife, Beth, live in Ashland, Kentucky, where they raised two children, Stephen and Sally.
